After I cut the translucent alabaster for the last project’s rose, I was left with 2 odd pieces. The are shaped vaguely like the pieces I cut for the Mini Calla Lily set, so I decided to add to that group. I was originally going to use them both for this, but decided after I started the first that the other was going toward an experiment.

Alabaster Mini Calla All images are the physical and intellectual property of Barbara Minnick, aka Stormcarver. Unauthorized use prohibited. I started this lily the same way I did the others. Basically, I put in where the top petal will be, then sketch the general shape down the stone. This time, it didn’t work out too well. Seems that in my freehand projects of late, something in the way I see things has changed.

Frustrated that the normal method wasn’t working, I removed my lines and went freehand.

I carved out the general shape of the top petals and tapered the body. Then the excess is removed from the top. The general shape and front petal overlap are made clearer, taking away stone with a straight blade until I am happy with the overall look. Using a gouge, I make a hole in the top to accommodate the removal of stone from the interior of the flower. I use the 6mm skew blade to begin removing stone from the hole to the inside edges of the petal. I keep removing stone from the interior, shaping the petals from the inside, adding top curves and shaping the interior petal wrap. This is where I left off last night. Today, I will continue working the inside of the lily and further define the front overlapping petals.
