Stormcarver

While studying the overall piece and planning for petal shaping, I realized that one petal was too wide to be realistic. With two others ling beneath it at the top left, I had to trim it down. I put in the new lines for all 3 petals and worked the area to the point of progress of the rest of the rose.

Pink Lace Alabaster Rose, cont’d. All images are the physical and intellectual property of Barbara Minnick, aka Stormcarver. Unauthorized use prohibited. When this was done, I went through, from outside in, and carved in the curves, including the angled depth, making sure that each matched the one beneath it. The next pass corrected any mistakes and put in the top curves of individual petals. The next step was to plan for the underside of petals to be carved. I have to be sure that I compensate for petals lying beneath the one I am working on while making the thickness uniform. The nature of the stone came strongly into play during this step. one petal in particular has a curve in the outer edge that follows a natural layer of the stone. Any pressure on it instantly chipped away one of these thin layers -- three times over before I figured out how to correct the problem. I changed the angle of the curve just enough that it is not prone to break.

The photos below show my progress so far on this step. I continue with that today, hoping that things go well.

I also have major rat relocation going on today, including the removal and addition of cage walls. It’s going to take quite a while, but carving should be the activity of the evening.
