J has asked that I make a white counterpart for her rose. Hers was of the first couple carved, and my style has changed greatly over time. It will be interesting to see how the older and the new go together.

J likes the way the petals fold over each other, so I put that into the design. Hers is also the only one I have added leaves to in the carving of the body. So, I have put that into the new design as well.

J’s White Crystal Alabaster Rose All images are the physical and intellectual property of Barbara Minnick, aka Stormcarver. Unauthorized use prohibited. Original Rose New Sketch I cut a slab of alabaster a couple nights ago, then cut it down to a workable size. Ended up making this about 1/2 inch smaller on both top edges after I began to transfer the sketch onto it.

This could be a difficult piece as, if you look at the striations in the stone, the darker areas are softer than the lighter. Because of the way this is designed, I am going to have to hand carve the body shape as I go along.

Here is what I have so far... Working the outer petals down today and will try to get the basic body shape done in the overlap area. Once that is done, I can sketch in the petal folds. Hopefully, the softer areas of the stone hold the shape of the folds.
